The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) is launching a new facility for the reprocessing of medical devices. The 2000 square meter facility is one of the most modern of its kind in Europe. It is used for the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments.

Surgical instruments such as clips, pincettes, scalpels or endoscopes, which can be used several times, have to be reprocessed after each surgical operation. The reprocessing unit for medical devices (RUMED/CSSD), which started operations in June, performs this task for the USZ. With the approximately 3.6 million instruments reprocessed each year, the USZ can manage around 90 operations a day.

The new RUMED/CSSD contributes to increased patient safety and makes it possible to supply the USZ Airport outpatient health center with sterile goods in addition to the core area. The first patients will be treated there starting in October. Last but not least, the RUMED/CSSD with its additional capacities will allow future growth of the hospital (see press release http://www.usz.ch/news/medienmitteilungen/Seiten/mm-AEMP.aspx, 29.06.2020).
